With nearly 30 years of nightclub djing experience Andy Norman has been there and played the lot. He is most well known for his many years of contribution to building the global house brand Hed Kandi since 1999. Andy worked alongside brand founder Mark Doyle to embark on an incredible journey to make one of the UK’s biggest dance music clubbing brands. He helped to compile, mix and promote the brand’s cd releases since 1999 and will always be recognised as the labels unofficial “Godfather”.
Andy is truly, an international globetrotter and over the last 14 years graced the decks in some of the world’s greatest nightclubs. There are not too many destinations where he hasn’t brought his unmistakeable dj style. His talents have been called upon for some exquisite high profile events such as F1 parties in Monaco, Montreal, Bahrain & Abu Dhabi.
He’s also played corporate events for some of the biggest global brands.
He bases his DJ style upon being somewhat of party-crowd pleaser, “If you play to the ladies, you are all but guaranteed to have a great night!” Never afraid to play a classic or sound style, Andy’s ability to read a crowd and take them on a musical journey is unique and not only leaves clubbers with memories of a great night but also one of the reasons promoters will often seek out his return. Andy is very well known for being one of the friendliest and down to earth professionals with in the club world.
Whilst Andy is more commonly known for his work with Hed Kandi, he is well respected for playing numerous music styles over the years and has an extensive catalogue of music to call on. He has also played for a number of the UK’s top recording artists as The Pet Shop Boys and Jamiroquai. Andy regularly tunes into his love of soul music and is well respected in this side of the industry, often djing at cooler more intimate events for Expansion Records and the Soul Network.
Andy also has a great interest in radio. He has a number of past radio shows on Jazz Fm, Galaxy, Ministry of Sound Radio and Jemm One under his belt and numerous guest appearances on Gaydio and Prosto Radio (Ukraine). His shows became a firm favourite with listeners globally tuning in every week.
Andy’s love affair with djing and clubs began back during the mid eighties after seeing previous success of his older brother. At first just a lover of all forms of music, his taste soon moved toward Soul and Dance music.
Andy’s journey started while running the legendary independent dance music record store ‘Vinylmania’ in West London, during the late 80’s early 90’s. The store became one of the most well known and respected in the South East of England. During the late 80’s Andy struck up a friendship with Mark Doyle, the creator of dance music compilation label Hed Kandi and more recently Fierce Angel, at a small West London nightclub called Haven Stables.
He started working with label founder Doyle back in 1989; it was around that time they both began running local club nights that later went on to be legendary in West London. The early nights ‘Freestyle’ and ‘Colours’ had a great following but the most popular and the very well known night was ‘Back To Love’. These nights ran for a number of years. During these years Hed Kandi was born and one of the first releases went under the same title as the Back To Love night.
While working together with Doyle, Andy worked as the resident dj at Heaven Stables in Ealing, West London. He enjoyed some great years there and forged a number of other partnerships with other club promoters and broadened his dj horizons.
Over the years Andy worked on the London club circuit under another DJ alias for a number of years ‘DJ Normski’, working at a number of top club events; The Crazy Club, Black And White Productions, The Wide Awake Club and Happy Days amongst others, alongside the likes of DJs Carl Cox, Brandon Block, Alex P, Smokin’ Jo, Fat Tony and Matt Jam Lamont.
He’s now embarking on the journey to produce a new clubbing brand, “The Original DJs” alongside some of his old dj pals. With an aim to play the original house music sound that he and his friends know and love. The world Hed Kandi may now be behind him now but his contributions will definitely not be forgotten.
Andy’s hunger and desire to please crowds across the globe a driving force. It keeps him moving forward and has promoters & clubs always interested in acquiring his professional services.
